School transport is available free for those children who qualify under the Powys scheme. There is also a vacant seat scheme which requires payment.
To qualify for primary school transport, pupils must reside 2 or more miles from the nearest school, measured by the shortest walking distance, wherever practicable within existing transport routes.
It is very important that parents of children who come by bus inform their child’s class teacher in writing or by telephone if the child is not going home on the bus so that misunderstandings do not occur. Please remember to inform the bus driver as well.
For obvious safety reasons all pupils are expected to show good behaviour on school transport. St. Michael’s School and all transport operators abide by the Powys Code of Conduct for Acceptable Behaviour on School Transport. Those pupils whose behaviour falls short of what is acceptable will undergo sanctions.
Please note that Powys LA will only provide and fund transport for pupils to their nearest school.

Vacant Payment Scheme
If you live too close to the school to qualify for free transport, but are near an existing school transport route, you can apply to use a vacant seat. There is a fee for this.
Please note that routes can’t be altered to collect pupils who use the Vacant Seat Payment Scheme – you’ll have to get to an existing route yourself. If more space on school transport is needed for qualifying pupils, your seat may be withdrawn.
You can get more information and an application form from the Passenger Transport Unit, County Hall, Llandrindod Wells, LD1 5LG
Safety code
All pupils using school transport must obey the safety rules. These are listed on the application form. The Safety Code is attached to the application form and should be retained by the pupil.
